LONDON: The first-ever Viagra-like erection pill for men, the little blue pill called Levitra, will be available in the UK on Thursday, with the first of its kind, available in 2025.
The little blue pill, which was developed by Pfizer in response to a growing concern about cardiovascular risks, was developed by German firm Pfizer and has a unique mechanism of action, unlike other ED drugs such as Levitra that have a different mechanism of action.
The company says that it has completed the research and is in the final stages of Phase III clinical trials for the drug.
The drug is currently under review by the European Medicines Agency, which is expected to give final approval in the first half of this year.
The first-ever erection-like pill is a relatively new option for men who are struggling to maintain an erection despite medication.
It was originally developed to treat symptoms of low blood flow to the penis, such as angulation, and to treat chest pain and heart failure, which are common causes of sudden decline in blood flow to the heart.
But the pill's mechanism of action was discovered when scientists were looking for a way to treat other health problems and were unexpectedly unable to find one that was so far-reduced to the point that it would be impossible to achieve a erection using a pill that was already capable of achieving one.
Pfizer Chief Executive Martin kcal said: "This is the first time that a new erection-like treatment is available without a prescription and we are delighted to be working with Bayer AG to bring it to market."
Levitra - marketed under the brand name Viagra - will be available in the UK in 25mg and 50mg doses starting in September.
The new formulation will allow men who suffer from ED to maintain an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse, whilst also being able to have sex within 10 minutes and have an erection to the point where sex is required.
Levitra is the first oral treatment to be proven to cure erectile dysfunction, but it's not yet clear whether men who are taking Levitra should be able to get an erection - or whether it's more likely to be a side effect.
Levitra's side effects are generally mild and include headaches, flushing, indigestion and nasal congestion.
A separate clinical trial, which compared the two treatments in men with mild to moderate erectile dysfunction, concluded that Levitra caused minimal side effects and did not affect sexual function.
Both the Pfizer and Bayer trials have been completed, with Levitra being submitted for clinical trial in the US.
The European Medicines Agency is set to finalise its stance on the approval of Levitra, with the drug expected to remain available in the UK for up to five years after its launch.
Levitra is still in development, with the expected launch in the second half of this year.
It is expected to be available in the US on Friday.
